The Institute does not normally comment on the weather. The weather, however, has been demanding attention, and we feel obliged (as the region's foremost authority on things that are not our business) to respond.

Our Assessment

The recent weather is, frankly, unimaginative. We have observed:

  • Blue skies, again. A safe, crowd-pleasing choice that takes no risks and asks nothing of the viewer.
  • Clouds, arranged with what we can only call laziness. We have seen this composition before, many times, from the same artist.
  • Rain, which at least attempts melancholy, but lays it on rather thick.

On Originality

We had hoped, after billions of years, for the sky to develop a distinctive voice. Instead it continues to recycle the same palette: blues, greys, the occasional sentimental sunset that Nigel refuses to acknowledge for personal reasons.

A truly ambitious sky would surprise us. This one is content to be beautiful, which we consider a failure of nerve.

A Constructive Note

We do not wish to be entirely negative. There was, last Thursday, a peculiar yellowish light before a storm that the committee described, cautiously, as "interesting." It did not last. Nothing brave ever does.

We will continue to monitor the sky and report on its lack of growth. The public is advised to dress for a climate that has run out of ideas.
