The Institute of Questionable Art

Preparing the room.
Nigel is straightening the frames and clearing his throat...
Dimming the lights to a flattering, faintly judgemental level...
Uncorking something he cannot pronounce but insists is correct...
Adjusting the velvet rope around nothing in particular...
Rehearsing an opinion he will deliver as though it were always obvious...
Gift Department
Turn an ordinary photo into a one-of-one artwork, then give it as a download, print, tile, or certificate-backed object with a secret origin story.

Nigel Ponceby-Smythe, appraising a gift fit for a wall
Choose your starting point
The gift department begins with the state of the artwork, not the size of the wrapping. Choose the starting point that matches what you have already done.
The order is plain: make the artwork, keep one variation, then send it or order the object. The committee has been asked not to complicate this. It is coping.
No artwork yet
Start in the Studio. The Wing returns four variations; keep one before choosing the present.
Create artwork first →Already kept one
Open a saved artwork and choose whether it becomes an e-card, greeting card, print, mug, tile, or download.
Use saved artwork →No Nigel required
Upload a finished file for ordinary printing, without provenance, title, or the usual institutional squint.
Use my own image →Choose the present
The artwork is made first. The gift option comes next: email, envelope, object, or urgent digital evidence. A civilised system, despite itself.
Free and immediate
Use a kept artwork, write the message, and let the Institute email the recipient a card page with the optional source reveal.
Send an e-card →Printed and posted
Put the artwork on the cover, your words inside, and have a real folded card posted from the United Kingdom.
See greeting cards →Physical object
Turn the kept work into something the recipient can hang, sip near, or place on a desk with insufficient explanation.
Browse objects →Last-minute dignity
Buy the clean digital file and provenance paperwork when the occasion has arrived with poor manners.
See download options →1
Upload one photo, choose one movement, and keep the Wing variation that survives review.
2
Pick email, folded card, print, tile, mug, or download from the kept artwork.
3
Write the message, choose the delivery route, and let the recipient meet the provenance at a civilised pace.
What is actually in the gift?
This is the bit people need to understand: the gift is not only the artwork. It is the artwork plus the strange origin story that makes it personal.
Either a physical print/tile/board or a clean digital file they can keep.
A provenance certificate with the artwork, title, official-looking write-up, and Nigel-level seriousness.
The code opens the provenance page, so the recipient can scan it with a phone.
The page explains the secret origin: the ordinary photo that became the important-looking artwork.
Gift-worthy output
Genuine saved artworks, freshly escaped into the public gallery. Each began as someone's regrettable photograph.
Seen on actual objects
The gift need not stay on a screen. Recent gallery works, photographed on real objects, so the recipient can sip beside it, hang it, or pretend they discovered it.

Never Be Caught Unprepared
The Registry of Forthcoming Obligations keeps your birthdays, anniversaries, and assorted obligations on file, then reminds you a month out (and again a fortnight before) with ample time to commission a one-of-one gift. A privilege of membership, which is to say: free.
Start where every gift starts
Create the artwork first, choose the occasion later. The studio is the gift department with better lighting and fewer normal presents.
Create artwork firstDrink your morning beverage beside a work of unbearable significance.
A recent saved artwork, framed and hung with total, unearned confidence.
Crisp evidence, presented as though culture specifically requested it.
