The Institute is proud (almost unbearably so) to announce the acquisition of a chair.

It is grey. It swivels. One arm is slightly lower than the other, which our curatorial team has decided is "a commentary."

Provenance

The chair was sourced from the closing-down sale of an office supply shop, where it was marked at a price we found insultingly low and therefore tripled in our own records. Its previous owner is believed to have been a regional sales manager named Gary, whom we now refer to in catalogue text as "the artist."

The chair will be displayed on a low plinth, roped off, and accompanied by a wall label of four hundred words, none of which mention that it is a chair.

Curatorial Statement

"In an age of spectacle, the chair refuses. It does not perform. It simply waits, as we all wait, for someone important to sit down."

Nigel wept upon reading this statement, which he also wrote.

Visiting

The chair may be viewed by appointment, on a day to be determined, in a location we have not yet secured. Patrons are reminded not to sit in the art. The art is for looking at, and for justifying our funding, which is also imaginary.
