The permanent collection is, at present, not where we left it.

We say this without alarm, because alarm is undignified, and because the collection consists largely of a chair.

The Facts, Such As They Are

The chair (grey, swivelling, one arm lower than the other, "a commentary") was last seen on its low plinth, roped off, accompanied by four hundred words of wall label. The plinth remains. The label remains. The chair has gone to consider its options.

The Investigation

The committee has been convened and has, predictably, sighed. The Provenance Office offered to assist but is hiring no one, and so could not spare the staff it does not have. Rupert was consulted by telephone and found the whole affair "very you."

Reassurance to Patrons

Nothing of monetary value has been lost, as nothing in the permanent collection has monetary value: only significance, which is heavier, harder to misplace, and which we have nonetheless contrived to misplace.

The search continues, slowly, as all important things do.
